Go to the Better Business Bureau in your city and search for BBB accredited credit counselors. You will find companies that the BBB has already checked out, who are members, and who follow the BBB code of conduct. You can look these guys in the eye, call with any questions, go to their offices, know what they look like, have a place to complain if something goes wrong. I checked out one which advertises here and found they are licensed by the state (I'd confirm that if I wanted to work with them), a member of the Chamber of Commerce, and offer free consultations. I thought they were a non-profit agency (you pay fees but they are supposed to break even rather than earn a profit to give their employees) but didn't see that on their site. I'd try for a respected non-profit agency. These companies were listed under Credit and Debt counseling and Credit and Debt consolidation. You interview them and see if they offer what you need. I'd check out more than one, also, to see what they recommend before deciding. Way better than going with some unknown with a website under construction who can be anywhere in the world and take your money and run. |
