My dh is a golf course superintendent he says to till up your yard 3 to 4 inches. then you can plant your seeds then cover with straw or after the tilling you can lay sod. make sure it is compatible with the area you live fertilize with a good grass fertilizer you will have to water it for a couple of weeks unless you live where all of the rain is falling. when the grass is 2 or 3 inches tall you can cut it for the first time. |

You need to amend your soil and add to it. You can either til it up and add top soil and lime before you seed which is the best way or you can just add a couple of inches of top soil and a little lime then seed. After you throw down the seed, using a lot of it you need to lightly cover it with wheat straw so the birds won't eat all of it. Then water it everyday for at least a week. If you are planting any shrubs or flowers make sure you dig a hole big enough for the root ball with extra space for the roots to grow. usually the hole is 1-1/ 2 to 2 times the size of the root ball. Always add potting soil to the ground soil and mix it up before filling up the hole. I have found that the digging in hard clay is easier if it is wet. Good luck. |

Till the soil and add an amender. This will give you some healthy soil. Fescue is a good grass in many areas. It will withstand heat, cold and stays green. Don't know where you live so ask a nursenursery it the best type for your area. |
