Here is one of my favorite quotes about airline safety from the FAA website: "Air travel is the safest mode of mass transportation. According to Dr. Arnold Barnett of MIT, based on the accident rate over the last few years, you would have to fly on average once a day every day for 22,000 years before you would perish in a U.S. commercial aviation accident. In 1998 there were more than 10 million departures and not one fatality aboard a commercial aircraft. There are actually more car accidents that airplane accidents. there is a one in a million chance that your plane will crash.

Airline travel is many times safer than driving. Do you know someone who has been injured or killed in a car? I know several. Most people do. Airplane? I know of no one.

Safer than driving for sure.

EXTREMELY SAFE! The probability of anything happening to you is almost zero. To get an idea go to you local city's airport, look at how many arrivals and departures there are in one day. There are hundreds of thousands of flights each day around the world and accidents are rare. The negative stigma associated with air travel is due to the fact that when accidents happen fatalities are high, this scares people. Looking at the numbers of people flying each day, even if there was at least an accident a day the chances that it would be your flight would still be agonizingly close zero.

There are way more cars on the road then planes in the sky. You do the math. What are the odds?

Airline travel is wayy more safer than car travel. You don't hear of that many plane crashes. Also planes are constantly inspected.

Yes. More precautions are taken by mechanics and pilots and airline staff before flying than we all do before driving. Plus, safety is relative. Accidents can happen anytime, be it up above in the clouds, on land or sea. They are accidents and called as such because nobody expects them to happen or knows that they will happen.

Ofcourse safer than surface transport although you will be always at risk due to high altitude. But if you see the practical data air crash is very very few than surface accident.

40,000 people die every year - just in the US alone - from car crashes. 95 people die every year, on average (1983-2008), on U.S. airlines. Which looks safer to you?
